So we watched the new 3 parter of Red Dwarf. Very strange. Way better than season 8, though I didn't like how they made up season 9 and 10, I think they could have glossed over the missing time w/o rubbing it in our faces that there was no season 9 and 10. The saddest episodes of RD ever, certainly. Sad because they showed some real emotion and because Chris Barrie and Craig Charles both just look so world-weary. They used to have young bright eyes that showed through their character's weaknesses but now with 20 years behind them their eyes only punctuate Dave and Arnold's failings. They look defeated. I mean yes they're older, it shows, they by no means look bad, but the age really changed the characters. More than ever they needed the studio audience to laugh with them but they skipped that with this series, and it became much darker.

Yes there were plenty of laughs, one of the best bits being at the very beginning of the first episode, but it's not overflowing with them. There was quite a lot of English-only humour, some of which I know I missed out on. Poo-heads.

Sigh. You can't go back I guess. There will never be another Red Dwarf, and there will never be another show quite like it.
