USAians and Canadians, time change tonight

This is the "Fall back" switch from Daylight Savings Time, so set your clocks to 11 pm at midnight or whenever: you can always check timeanddate.com, just to be sure. I'm going to try and think of it as an extra hour to sleep in or get things done.

November 1, 2009 - Word Count

It just occurred to me that some of our Wrimos are in other countries. Oops, it was Bubblehead!Jenn there for a moment. She makes appearances around birthdays too. I'm pre-marking it for midnight. Have at fellow writers.

So here is the daily word count post.

How to survive NaNoWriMo

How to survive NaNoWriMo - Ten Rules
(With minimal damage to limbs, family and sanity)

1. Find a comfortable writing spot. Preferably two or three. (I like the big chair in the den, the Borders Cafe, and of course my room.)
2. Keep something to drink constantly. Water, juice, coffee, energy drinks, you pick your poison of choice.
3. When your fingers start to hurt, get up. You can't write if you can't type. This would be an excellent time to get a voice recorder and make your S.O. type for you. Get's them involved.
4. Take out meals, one-pot meals, and any kind of soup you can put in a crock pot are a must. You wanted to try that Vegan Chilli? Go for it.
5. Get up and move. Stiff joints are no good for anyone. Every hour that you're writing, get your butt up and stretch.
6. Eye drops, lots of eye drops. I prefer Rohto V and Similasan.
7. Keep music. I suggest several playlists. One for general writing mayhem, one for passionate scenes, and one for when you want to throttle every character in your novel.
8. Keep your writing area neat. Otherwise when you go to pull up those notes, they may be in Saskatchewan.
9. Shower. Bathe. Just keep clean. A miasma of funk only gets you sprayed with Febreeze and that stings the eyes.
10. Spend time with your loved ones. They'll appreciate it more after not seeing you for a few days. Pets are included in this list.

Those are my 10 rules on how to survive NaNo. Good luck and good novelling.

meh reaction to Reclaiming the Blade

Richard Taylor! Viggo! Bob Anderson! Swords! I so wanted to like this.

Shame that Reclaiming the Blade does the ponderous narration thing. It's mostly the script, which keeps making portentous statements and generalizations about how The Blade was So Amazing before those Awful Guns. They kept reaching for dramatic tension, instead of just relaxing and letting their passion show. The Netflix version didn't have any special features, but I doubt they'd be worth actually paying much for.

Also, the term "European Martial Arts" does not need to be used every five minutes: we get it, OK?

(Yes, I'm in a rotten mood today, but the documentary really was disappointing.)

lotrips news

[info - livejournal.com] slashababy is still open for signups! It's the Lotrips holiday fic exchange, so the more, the merrier. Anyone who doesn't want to sign up on LiveJournal, please send email to secret slasha @ gmail.com -- we can do it that way, no problem.

It's rec the reccers month at [info - livejournal.com] lotr_fic_recs.

If you're thinking of writing adoptive kid fic, you must read [info - livejournal.com] viggorlijah's post, Fandom Primer on International Adoption as a story trope: read it and weep. But the stories based on RL issues could be really good.

RPS Kink meme - just getting started. Some of the other kink memes have been amazing and very inspiring...

And because I've been told I don't plug myself enough: links to all the LOTR RPS fic I could find through September are at [info - livejournal.com] lotrips (October to come soon), and I'm still posting my fic recs on delicious.

WorldBuilding Articles and Tools

This post is in response to [info]dani_meows request for good WorldBuilding articles.

The Fantasy WorldBuilder Guide: 30 Days to a World - This guide takes exactly 7 hours and 30 minutes to build up a world from the very bottom up. Usually that is 15 minutes a day, but we're on a time crunch here. If you do four or five of the exercises each day, then you'll have your world built by the end of this week.

WorldBuilding: Wikipedia article- Wikipedia always has great links to WorldBuilding sites embedded into each article's page. Also, they give you in-depth looks at the construction steps.

Elfwood: FARP (Fantasy Art Resource Project) - It's a how to create Science Fiction and Fantasy Worlds in 7 days type of deal. Also they've got books listed that can help you go into greater detail later.

Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America: Fantasy WorldBuilding Questions - This is a helpful series of articles from the professional writers out there. And you don't need to be an Astrophysicist to under most of it. But, sometimes it helps. :)

These next two are linked together. These articles are written by everyday people with the know-how to give you fluent steps and rules that give you just enough wiggle room to go nutty with the fun. Both are from wikiHow:

How to Write a Fantasy Novel Set in Another World
How to Create a Fictional World from Scratch

Medieval Demographics Made Easy - Need that population to be under control so that when the dragon comes, he'll have a good meal? This is your guide. Well it's a a decent guide for all things Fantasy. You get to know how population density works in Fantasy Novels.

WorldBuilding: Fantasy Religion Design Guide - Have the heathen hordes come knocking at your computer with ideas about what type of religion they practice, but you don't know how to translate that into real words? This will help.

AutoRealm: Mapper - Need a map of your country? World? That little tract of land where the Gnomes have set up a fairground? This is your tool. It's PC-compatible, sorry Macs. Will try to find one for you guys too.

That's it for now guys.
